Developmental Editing:
This is the first and most crucial stage of any editing service. For developmental editing, I will focus my reading and critique toward strengthening issues of plot, worldbuilding, characterization, theme, and internal consistency. I will not be editing for any grammar or sentence-level issues at this time. This is the stage at which we work together to make the story as strong as it can be before moving on to final editing and polishing stages.
What you will receive: in-document comments (using the comments feature) throughout the manuscript, as well as full 3-6 pages, discussing critiques and suggestions for revision.
Rate: 0.008 per word (a 50,000 word document would be $400, a 100,000 word document would be $800)
Line Editing:
For this stage, I will edit to clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow, and refine language. I will focus on reader’s perspective in search of potential problems, confusions, and inconsistencies that might adversely affect a reader’s focus and engagement, while also keeping the author’s intent in mind, so as not to erase the author’s particular style and tone. This includes ensuring internal (i.e., world-building) consistencies and find issues of anachronism, setting, character, language choice, and genre-specific expectations. It also includes addressing prose/sentence-level issues such as repetition, problems of tone or rhythm, confusing dialogue tags, and major problems with grammar and mechanics.
In this stage I will not make any significance changes to or comments on worldbuilding, characterization, or plot as these should already have been addressed.
What you will receive: in-document edits using the “Track Changes” feature in either Word or Google Doc, as well as in-document comments as needed, and a completed Style Sheet.
Rate: 0.006 per word (a 50,000 word document would be $300, a 100,000 word document would be $600)
Proofreading:
This is the final stage of editing and can only be completed when all other revisions and edits have been done, either by me or by the writer themselves. At this stage, I will be doing a careful “weeding” of the document to locate and fix typos, small punctuation errors, and other minor “cosmetic” issues that need to be corrected for final publication. I will not make any critiques or changes to larger issues.
What you will receive: in-document edits using the “Track Changes” feature in either Word or Google Doc, as well as in-document comments as needed.
Rate: 0.005 per word (a 50,000 word document would be $250, a 100,000 word document would be $500)
Beta Read:
A Beta Read is best done after you have completed a manuscript draft and have done at least one pass of self-revisions and now need another pair of eyes on your work. A beta read looks at the broad strokes of the manuscript, focusing on major elements such as plot coherence and character development. However, it is not as nitty-gritty and detailed as a full developmental edit. It generally does not include extensive in-document comments that dig into individual scenes.
What you will receive: A critique letter of a minimum of 3 pages, detailing the overall impressions, including strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement.
Rate: 0.002 per word (a 50,000 word document would be $100, a 100,000 word document would be $200)
Worldbuilding:
I am also happy to offer worldbuilding consultations in the form of 1-hour long video chat sessions in which we can discuss the worldbuilding issues in your story as you work on a first draft or revisions, and help to point out inconsistencies, and suggest exercises/activities/resources for fleshing out your world where needed.
A 1-hour session is $40 (due at the beginning of the video chat). However, if further video consultations are desired for the SAME project, additional 1-hour sessions will be discounted at $30.
