Freelance Editing and Coaching Services

UPDATE 22 August 2025:
I am closing all editing services for the foreseeable future, effectively Sept 1st. Thank you to my previous clients. I hope to return upon completion of my degree.

I am actively accepting new clients for both freelance editing and writing coaching services. Freelance editing includes three kinds/levels of editing: developmental, line/copyediting, and proofreading. Further details about these and the coaching services can be found on their relevant drop-down tabs.

These services can be valuable for any writer at any stage of their drafting process.  However, they can be especially useful for those writers who plan to indie or self-publish and need a professional editing eye to help make the writing as strong as possible before uploading to Kindle Publishing or other self-publishing platforms. It can also be useful for a final editing pass before sending queries to agents, etc.

In addition, I can provide both editing and coaching services not only for fiction writers, but also for academic and nonfiction writing as well. My history in academic writing, both as an author and as an editor, gives me valuable experience to help guide a scholar through their academic writing, whether it be for a short-form conference presentation, or a long-form journal article or book chapter.

Please note: I do NOT assist with formatting a file for Kindle or other e-book formats. That is a technical skill I do not possess. I focus on making the writing itself shine as much as it can.

Credentials:

I have been writing in some form or another for over 25 years. I have published several poems, won honorable mention in several short story writing contests, and I am an alumna of the prestigious Futurescapes Writer’s Workshop. My short story “In the Empty Rooms” is forthcoming from the SFF magazine Haven Speculative (July 2023 issue).

I have earned a Master’s degree, and ABD in Literature, with a specialization in Science Fiction and Fantasy. I have published academic articles in several respected journals including the MOSF Journal of Science Fiction, and Plaza: Dialogues in Language and Literature.

In addition, I have 10 years of teaching experience in English at a university-level, including teaching Writing, Creative Nonfiction, and Science Fiction literature courses. I was Editor-in-Chief for the literary journal The Rockhurst Review for 2 years, a staff editor for Plaza: Dialogues in Language and Literature, and a member of the Executive Board of the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts for 2 years.

I worked as the book curator/buyer for a monthly book subscription box company for four years, and have been working with and around the publishing and bookselling industry off and on for 7 years. I am also currently employed as a freelance writer, writing literature study guides for several online education sites.

Genres:

I am familiar with and comfortable working with mainstream/literary fiction, and most areas of genre fiction, including: romance, mystery, science fiction, and fantasy. However, my specialty is in science fiction and fantasy. In addition, while I am capable of working with any sub-genre of romance, I am particularly well-versed in historical, LGBT romance, and those areas where romance and fantasy converge. I do not work much with straight horror, though certain levels of horror within another genre, such as dark fantasy, are in my wheel-house.

I am also proficient in academic-styles of writing in the humanities, and am happy to take on projects such as academic articles, Master’s theses, etc. I am comfortable with MLA, APA, and Chicago styles.
