Quick Update, Oct 24th

Apologies for missing my Friday post deadline last week! I’ve been working like crazy to find a new job. Filling out dozens of applications, revising and re-revising my resume, drafting bunches of cover letters… I’ve had a handful of phone interviews that haven’t gone anywhere, and I have an in-person interview tomorrow (fingers crossed, friends!).

I’ve also been doing a little bit of freelance lesson writing for a study website, AND I’ve been trying to submit a short story I wrote to some literature magazines. So… I just got very busy the week whizzed past me without my even really noticing. I’ll have a full blog post up this Friday on schedule, though!

A couple updates:
*I just finished reading a couple great novellas I will try to write up reviews for soon.
*Currently re-reading A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske (for the fifth time!) in preparation for the sequel A Restless Truth releasing on Nov 1st.
*Also planning to re-read the very witchy sapphic romance Payback’s a Witch later this week in the spirit of the Halloween season!

What I’m Currently Reading!

Hello folks, and sorry for the minor delay! Busy days, busy days. I have a couple book reviews I need to get written soon, and should have one for you next weekend. For today, here’s some of the books I’ve been reading lately. Plus a couple book playlists, because anyone who knows me knows I love a fun book-themed playlist!

So without further ado, what Amanda is currently reading:

The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings – this book is releasing in June, and I’m reading the arc right now. This book is EXCELLENT! It features a magical New Orleans where magic is performed through music, ghosts haunt the city, and graffiti has come to life and wanders the streets driving people mad if they walk through the paint. I have no idea how it’s going to end! You can definitely expect a review when I finish this book.

Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet by Thich Nhat Hanh – this is the last book that came out before Thich Nhat Hanh’s death in January, though it actually a collection of some previous talks, writings, interviews, etc that had been compiled by his students following his stroke a few years ago. I have a hardcover copy of this book, but I am  also listening to the audiobook right now, particularly while I work.

Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne – this is also an arc I’m reading, and the book will be out in July. It’s a feminist, semi-historically-grounded take on the Rapunzel fairytale. I’m not very far into yet, but it is very good so far and I’m curious to see how the author will twist the traditional elements of the tale.

Sisters of the Forsaken Stars by Lina Rather – I read and reviewed the first novella, Sisters of the Vast Black, last year and loved it. This novella is a direct continuation so, of course, I had to grab it! I haven’t actually started this one yet, it’s next on the pile as soon as I finish one of the above, lol.

Last Call at the Nightingale by Katharine Schellman – I actually JUST finished this one (another arc for a book releasing in June) and this will likely by the review I get written up for next week!

So that’s what I’m currently reading. You can likely expect reviews for most, if not all, of these (time depending, of course). In the meantime, here’s a couple of the book playlists I’ve put together lately, just for the fun of it!

Playlist for Nettle & Bone – here’s the playlist I made to go with Nettle & Bone, which I just reviewed a couple weeks ago. This book officially released last Tuesday, so if you haven’t bought it yet, GET THEE HENCE!

Playlist for Spindle Splintered – I didn’t actually write a review of Spindle Splintered by Alix Harrow because I read it last year when the blog was dead in the water. But the sequel is coming out soon, so I might read that and then review both together… possibly. In the meantime, have a playlist!

Playlist for King of Infinite Space – here’s another one for a book I read last year and didn’t review. King of Infinite Space by Lindsay Faye is a queer, modern-day, magical realist take on Hamlet, and it is EXCELLENT. I cried so bad at the end! I pulled this playlist together for it right after finishing the book. Enjoy!

Ok, that’s all from me for today! Expect a review next Saturday!

Recent Acquisitions and a Mini-Review

My book buying habit has been a bit out of control recently, and so I have a bunch of recent acquisitions to share. So! A catalogue of recent book purchases that have been added to the TBR pile:

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix (a new book by one of my favorite authors! I received an ARC of this through work, but never got around to reading it, and I knew I wanted to buy a copy anyway, so here we are!)

Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro (I have not read Mark Oshiro’s other work, but this book sounds really interesting and unique, and I watched a virtual book tour talk he gave, and he seemed really cool too, so I bought it!)

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini (I have had this book on pre-order for MONTHS. I was so excited when it finally showed up!)

Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh (I ADORED Allie Brosh’s blog, and I bought her first book and loved it with a fiery passion. I was shocked and delighted when I found out she was releasing a new book after 7 years! I ordered it immediately!)

Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me: Depression in the First-Person by Anna Mehler Paperny (this title, and the subject of this book, is something I understand deeply, and struggle with on a daily basis, so… yeah.)

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson (I got this as my August Book of the Month book, and then kinda just forgot about it. But it looks amazing and its definitely on the TBR list!)

The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem (I received this ARC through work, the book comes out in November. I’m about 1/3 of the way through so far, and I really like it. I’ll do a full review of this one later!)

So that’s my recent acquisitions. In addition, I wanted to drop a very quick short mini-review for a book I did not finish. I received an ARC of Midnight Bargain through work, but…

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
Release Date: October 2020
Status: DID NOT FINISH

I only got about 1/4 of the way through this book, which is a shame because I really tried to like it. It’s basically a second-world version of a Victorian fantasy romance, which I usually love. And the basic premise is, if a bit derivative and well-worn, was enjoyable enough. The basic plot is this: in a world reminiscent of Regency or Victorian England (but not), where magic is real, a young woman named Beatrice wants to be a sorceress. Both men and women are capable of magic, but only men are allowed to practice it, and women are barred from it once they become married because of fears of danger to an unborn baby. Beatrice doesn’t want to get married though, she wants to practice magic, and she is willing to make a deal with a mischievous spirit in order to make that goal a reality. Unfortunately, for her, she just happens to meet a charming man who seems to actually SEE her for who she is, and the romance that threatens to blossom between them, could undue all her ambitions.

It’s not a bad plot. Like I said, a bit well-worn, but certainly capable of being made interesting, entertaining, even compelling in the right hands. But the characters were very one-note, especially Beatrice. The love interest has a tad more personality and could be a very swoon-worthy leading man, but the very SUDDEN nature of his romantic interest was… hard to swallow no matter how much “suspension of disbelief” I threw at it. The dialogue was clunky and inauthentic, and the narrative prose was… not great. I was surprised because C.L. Polk’s other books (Witchmark, etc) are very highly regarded, so I was expecting this to be better. But overall, I was just unimpressed and uninterested. I’m a little worried it might just be ME, that I’m missing something, or being too critical, but… *shrug* There are too many books, and time is too limited to keep pushing through something that is clearly not working for me.

Ironically, I am currently also reading Clariel by Garth Nix – it’s the fourth book in the Old Kingdom series – and it has a somewhat similar plot to Midnight Bargain, and does it SO MUCH BETTER. The main character, Clariel, comes from a family with distant connections to the king, and a series of political machinations mean to marry her off, put her on the throne, and make her a political puppet. But Clariel has no interest in marrying anyone (I think she’s written to be aromantic/asexual even!), she has no interest in the throne, or magic, or the city: she just wants to go be a solitary hunter/border patrol in the great forests, and she’s willing to do some questionable things to get what she wants. Like I said, somewhat similar plots, but the difference in writing is ENORMOUS. All the characters in Clariel are much more real, flawed and complex and interesting. And the prose is just WORLDS AWAY better. It’s been a very apt comparison, and its pure coincidence I happened to be reading them at the same time, to make that difference in quality so much more apparent. But here we are.

What I’m Currently Reading

I thought it would be fun to share what I am currently reading, just for the fun of it and so I can keep track of what I’m reading throughout the year. I would also love to hear what other people are reading currently, so please feel free to share in the comments!

Right now I am reading four books:

Solaris by Stanislaw Lem – I am reading this on Audible. It’s one of those classic foundational science fiction texts that, for whatever reason, I have just never gotten around to until now. So I finally just decided I needed to sit down and get to it. I’m about ¾ of the way through it now and I really like it. It’s philosophical and has a lot of really interesting technological, linguistic, and psychological concepts in it. It’s also creepy as shit sometimes, so that’s fun.

Disney’s Land: Walt Disney and the Invention of the Amusement Park That Changed the World by Richard Snow – I am a HUGE Disney nerd/devotee. I know all the problematic aspects of the company and I care about them, but it hasn’t changed the fact that Disney is practically a religion to me (I will probably write a post about that eventually). And I have been very interested in the biographies and histories about Disney (both the person and the company). I loved the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, and the new original docuseries on Disney+ called The Imagineering Story. So I knew I had to read this book! I’m a little over halfway through it now and it is absolutely FASCINATING! I highly recommend it to anyone who cares about Disney or, frankly, doing any kind of innovative/creative business venture.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Business Plans – as I mentioned in my About page, I am trying to learn everything I can about small business planning and management because I want to open my own bookstore. To this end, I bought this book a few weeks ago. I haven’t had a chance to work my way through it as far as I’d like, but I’m making progress. I’m finding it very practical and no-nonsense and actionable so far, which I really appreciate. Hopefully I’ll start writing my own business plan within the next month or so. *fingers crossed*

Lawrence In Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East by Scott Anderson – I LOVE histories and biographies, and I recently saw the classic film Lawrence of Arabia which kicked off a brand-new fixation/obsession for me (I will probably devote a whole post to this later as well). So, of course, the first thing I did was start looking for books about the actual historical T.E. Lawrence and the overall situation and politics of the Arab Revolt of which Lawrence was an integral part. I tried to convince myself I shouldn’t spend more money on books when I have so many I haven’t finished yet, but the last time I was at Barnes & Noble, I just couldn’t resist. So here we are. I’ve JUST started this one, but it already looks to be extremely fascinating!

I’d really love to hear what other people are currently reading! I always need more books to add to my miles-long TBR list! Please share in the comments!
